English School 1850: Superb Church Interior, Saint Marc's in Venice, Watercolor, possibly by Samuel Prout (1783-1852) This marvelous watercolor on light cardboard of the 19th century depicts the southern transept of the great San Marco basilica in Venice. Although the identifying legend on the old mat was in French, I attribute this work to an English artist, and I believe it to be from the hand of an important creator. My sense is that a picture of this quality and in this manner needs to be the work of Samuel Prout (1783-1852), a prolific watercolorist with a unique feeling for architectural spaces and for church interiors in general. I owned a Prout for a while and this one gives me the same kind of "vibe" as the previous picture I once had. Further reasons for my attribution: 1. We know that Prout was in Venice and worked in San Marco: see another image, from an English auction catalog. 2. The use of roughly-delineated human figures to give scale to the composition is a "Proutism." 3. Most convincingly, the modelling of light on the architectural elements, and the lovely method of depicting its arrival into the darkened church, at a slanted angle, are characteristic of Prout's eye and sensibility.
