MUSEUM QUALITY GEORGE III FORM ENGLISH STERLING SILVER TROPHY CUP; CLASSIC RAISED URN FORM; GADROONED BORDERS; ELEGANT RAISED POMEGRANATE FINIAL; SPLIT ACANTHUS, HARP FORM REEDED HANDLES; WILLIAM FRISBEE, FORMERLY PARTNER PAUL STORR; LONDON, 1808; 13 INCHES & 51 OUNCES
We are exceptionally pleased to offer this important, George III sterling silver trophy cup. From the renowned London silversmith William Frisbee. Partner of Paul Storr's from 1792-1798. The trophy date marked 1808. Frisbee apprenticed in 1774 under the highly regarded salver specialist John Crouch. First listed with John Edwards in 1791. Alone 1792. Partnership with the Paul Storr from 1792-1798. Sixth mark with son John 1811. In fact, three sons apprenticed under him. Frisbee is a highly regarded, not often observed silversmith. This is the only example of his we have ever owned, in our personal collection of thirty years. Now offered on Ebay. The massive trophy cup meticulously crafted in raised urn form. Tapering to base. Elegant, petal fluted lower body. Thick, stepped and turned upper rim. Adds both visual appeal and additional structural strength to the design. Long, sweeping reeded "harp" form handles. A most unique handle design. Of the dozens of examples of Georgian trophys illustrated in Peter Waldron's "Antique Silver". Not one displayed handles of this form. Perfectly fit, stepped domed cover. Two of the steps with elegant gadrooned borders. Third step gently domed. Topped with boldly modelled, raised pomegranate finial. A favorite design feature among Georgian silver collectors. Supported upon thick, well crafted stepped and gadrooned base. Period presentation inscription as shown, dated Dec. 3rd 1808. This important George III trophy cup from William Frisbee is massive. It is 13 inches tall and 9 inches handle to handle. Extremely thick, heavy guage sterling, it weighs 51 ounces. In excellent condition. The original cover extremely well fit to base. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The elegant pomegranate finial, extensive gadrooned borders and split acanthus joins retain their original crisp, vibrant hand chased detail. Well struck hallmarks to base rim, as shown. Matching partial hallmarks, maker, lion passant (sterling guarantee) and date letter to interior rim of cover. This monumental George III trophy cup would further the most advanced collection of fine 18th and 19th century English silver. Bearing the mark of William Frisbee. We believe to be a relatively "undiscovered" silversmith. Add to this, his seven year partnership with Paul Storr. And you have an extremely wise acquisition. Dramatically under-valued in the current market. Please feel free to inquire directly about this, or any item we've listed. Whether the item is alone or part of a set. Hopefully, not too many. Remember, the items you see are antiques. Hence, have an expected amount of wear from normal use. As such, returning an item because we failed to mention the tiniest bit of wear, or barely discernible flaw is not acceptable. Nor do we accept returns based on buyer's remorse. Nor change of taste, or because a buyer did not realize how "small" four inches might be once in hand. Please note, Massachusetts residents are subject to sales tax. We have over 2587 feedbacks. And, are quite proud of our 99.7% rating...
