The firm of Josiah Williams & Co. had a wonderful reputation for producing some of the finest high quality flatware of the period in most of the traditional patterns and some such as this set which feature a truly extraordinary seal top "Apostle" design. George Maudsley Jackson entered into a partnership with Josiah Williams of Josiah Williams & Co. in 1883 of Bristol. He opened his own showrooms in London and entered his own assay mark. Following the death of Josiah Williams in 1894 the company continued to trade as Josiah Williams & Co. In 1897 George Maudsley Jackson went into a new partnership with David Fullerton, still trading as Josiah Williams & Co., but today they are generally known as Jackson Fullerton. The company closed in 1940. All "Apostle" silver items are considered highly collectible. The "Apostle" motif was not just popular as flatware, it was also used to adorn elaborate hollow ware such as the finials on a coffee/tea services for example. The earliest recorded "Apostle Spoons" date back from around 1460, it is difficult to determine an exact date because this predates the beginning of the hallmarking system used in England since 1478. They were quite popular for about 200 years until they temporarily fell out of favor during the period of Protestant prejudice against images. The revival of interest in "Apostle" silver started about the middle of the nineteenth century in England and thousands of "Apostle" spoons were made and commonly given as baptismal gifts. They received their name because each spoon is surmounted by a small figure of one of the "Apostles" bearing the symbol associated with him. A complete set consists of thirteen spoons, twelve "Apostles" and a "Master" spoon bearing the figure of Christ. A full set of thirteen was commonly given by wealthy sponsors, while those of lesser means usually gave four, representing the Evangelists, and those less financially able usually gave a single spoon, representing the "Apostle" after whom the child was to be named, or possibly the patron saint of the sponsor. Apostle spoons have been treasured and handed down from generation to generation. Serving sets such as this were reserved only for the select few who could afford such luxuries, and it was not uncommon for them to purchase entire matching services of "Apostle" silver.
