EXTREMELY RARE 1833 WILLIAM IV ENGLISH STERLING SILVER FRUIT BASKET; ELEGANT RAISED SHELL AND SCROLL BORDER; PIERCED DIAMOND FORM TAPESTRY PANELS; LEAF, FLORAL AND FRUITED VINE DECORATION, SATIN CHASED; ON REEDED, LEAF AND CROSS BANDED FOOT; ROBERT GAINSFORD, SHEFFIELD, 1833; 23 OUNCES
This is beautifully designed, masterfully hand crafted William IV Sheffield sterling silver fruit basket. From the rarely observed firm of Robert Gainsford. Date marked with the distinctive Sheffield crowne and lower case "l", for 1833. Late 18th-early 19th century sterling from Sheffield is exceptionally rare, compared to that from London. Partly since it was not until 1773 that Sheffield had it's own assay office. Prior to that, the few silversmiths in the province travelled to London to register and pay duties. Afterward, t were never more than a handful of small Sheffield workshops. Compared to the hundreds in London. As a result, fine quality late eighteenth and early 19th century Sheffield sterling wares, such as this elegant fruit basket, are eagerly sought by collectors. Beautifully executed in circular form. Elegant, wide overflow raised and chased shell and scroll rim. Thick, ruffled and satin chased shells. With wide, curving vine to either side. Pierced, diamond pattern trellis panels beneath the vine. Followed by lavish leaf, floral and fruited vine decoration. An array of florals. In various stages of blooms. Ripened berries cascading downward. Satin finish leaves, alongside smooth fruit and florals. The contrast in surfaces provides even more visual appeal to an already dramatic form. Deep recessed, smooth finish centre. Tall, elaborate acanthus, curling vine and floral embellished handle. Elegant, wide collar barking dog coat of arms to leaf and vine framed centre. Barrel hinging, well crafted. Handle stays in the upright position when desired. Supported perfectly upon thick circular, reeded, leaf and banded base. The Neo-classical inspired decoration a pleasing contrast with the more aesthetic leaf and floral designs above. This fine, exceptionally rare William IV Sheffield sterling silver fruit basket is 10 inches in diameter and 9 1/2 tall, handle raised. Extremely thick, heavy guage sterling construction, weighs 23 ounces. It is in excellent condition. Amazing after almost 180 years. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The extensive shell, trellis and scroll broder and leaf, floral and fruited vine decoration retain their original crisp, vibrant hand chased detail. Well struck hallmarks to one of the shell cap and vine framed medallions, as shown. Please feel free to inquire directly about this, or any item we've listed.
