Amazing... near perfect... ale tankard by silversmiths W. & J. Priest of London in 1770 Offered at open auction is a sterling tankard made in 1770-1771. Just imagine enjoying a cold one in a tankard that is 6 years older than the United States. It's fascinating to think of who may have previously used this item through the years... what history! The 4 important hallmarks are identical on both the tankard body and the attached lid. 1 - the M. & J Priest hallmark as documented 2 - the lion passant indicating sterling silver 3 - the crowned leopard head indicating London 4 - the significant 'spikey' P for the years 1770-71 Absolutely every detail of this wonderful find is nearly perfect. The only supposed 'defect' I could find was a small pinpoint ding on the handle... and that is pictured in the second to last picture. Seriously, no scratches... no dents. The tankard sits even and level and the inside displays no corrosion or significant staining. Impressive, at a total weight of 709 grams or almost 23 troy ounces, this is a collector's dream. Height is right at 7 1/2 inches with a span from handle to lip rim of 6 1/2 inches. The mouth is a full 4 inches across. The handle detail is just stunning. It is tight and true, with no play or wiggle. The lid closes snugly with no indication of stress in the hinge or uneven wear that would indicate mis-alignment. The hinge works perfectly and the lid is completely aligned with the body of this fantastic tankard. Included with this auction will be copies of the documentation used to accurately date both the piece and the maker.... information that will become increasingly more valuable as time goes by. Please view the pictures carefully. I generally take my photographs outside in sunlight to accurately depict the colors and conditions of the items I am offering. If you see any discolorations or other anomalies that would indicate damage, it is either the sun, the clouds, the trees, or me. This fantastic tankard has been freshly polished and positively glows, and I'm still amazed at the condition. I try to fully and faithfully disclose any irregularities I find but I am far from perfect and some things may escape my detection. Also, when damage (no matter how minute) I try to make sure that it is clearly depicted in the photos. I believe that I have described the above auction offering accurately and in detail. The sterling that I am currently listing are not my property and as such, I am unable to make a 'deal' or entertain a 'Best Offer' scenario. They belong to a friend who is in the precious metals business. He has a warehouse that is stockpiled with sterling items that he has purchased over the last 28 years of business, including more than 100 different silver flatware sets. With the soaring price of silver, he had decided to send them all to the smelter to be melted down. Instead, I convinced him to let me try to offer them on Ebay so that they would not be destroyed. I know that t are silver lovers out t that wish to harken back to the days of genteel dining and gracious living. Besides, I have come to genuinely appreciate anything that is older than me and still survives. Due to the value of this listing, insurance is required. Overseas bidders... I will ship Global Express only with full insurance. Also, I WILL NOT alter the payment amount to thwart customs. Payment must be received within 7 days or a 'Non-paying bidder' complaint will be filed with Ebay and the bidder banned from future auctions (due cause - illness, family emergency, etc... just let me know)
