Dactyloidites asteroides has been a bit of a mystery since Walcott first described it from this exact quarry in 1891. It was described as an unusual medosoid. Later several described it as a trace fossil. Other have referred to it once again to a medusoid or jellyfish like organism. Several other species of organisms with the name Dactyloidites have been deteremined to be trace fossils, however, the true identity of Dactyloidites asteroides remains a mystery. Regardless, Dactyloidites asteroides is a classic enigmatic fossil from the Cambrian that has perplexed paleontologists since Walcott's days (late 1800's) through the present.
