A huge chromolithographed Poster of a mammoth Very rare to see chromolithograph posters of this size and surviving in this fine condition. The poster shows a reconstruction of a Mammoth by E.W. Pfizenmayer, based on two frozen specimen found in North East Siberia in 1901 and 1908. The poster was issued in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1909. E. W. Pfizenmayer was one of the scientists who actually recovered and studied the Berezovka mammoth, which had been very wel preserved in ice and was only discovered when the ice after thousands of years had started to melt. The mammoth's body was dissected, transported to St. Petersburg, and then Reassembled. Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra visited the still-reeking specimen: the Tsar listened to the explanations with interest, while his wife stood with her handkerchief pressed to her nose. Pfizenmayer wrote a popular book this adventurous investigation: Siberian Man and Mammoth. An unknown artist (or perhaps Pfizenmayer himself?) used Pfizenmayers data to draw this compelling reconstruction, which was issued as a poster, sized 107x89.5cm. Our copy in fine condition without damage or stains. Very rare. Both interested as an outstanding curiosity in paleontology as well as an artistic highlight. -------------------------- Even though this is one of our first auctions on Ebay, we are a certified Antiquarian Bookseller and member of a number of Antiquarian Bookseller Leagues.
