As with my other listing this week, this is a VERY large lock that unquestionably dates to a period between the late 1700's and early 1800's. My home was built between 1799 and 1803 and has similar locks, though all but the one on the front door are smaller and I have none with door knob size (2 1/5") brass knobs. To give you an idea of the size, I've shown my cellphone against the lock, but that really doesn't do it. When you look at the photos, you really can't see that the knobs are the identical size of regular door knob. Anyway, it is an enormous 7 inches wide by 6 inches high -- an inch 'taller' and a bit heavier than my other listing. And as I noted in that listing, I've found that most of these box style locks are more commonly 5 inches wide. In terms of condition, this lock needs some TLC. The comparatively thin metal around the outside of the lock has been bent up at the top and side --- visible in the photos of the back. I think this interferes with the action of the handles, though I'm not sure they are in their correct positions. The lock also has a keeper (that measures 4 inches long). I don't imagine this was the original, but it came with and should work with the lock. Anyway cleaned up, with the paint removed, this would be an awesome piece. As with the other lock, I would've worked on it , but it really deserves proper care by someone more knowledgeable than I am -- as well as some repair that I can't do. I purchased this lock (along with the other 2 I have on eBay ) from the estate of an elderly gentleman who had a lock business. Although he'd retained his key making machine and lots of paraphernalia -- he'd only saved the few very old pieces I've listed. If I may provide any further information or answer any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail. Also, I should mention that while I've allowed eBay's calculator (based upon weight) to determine shipping, should it be above $9.00 - please disregard in the U.S. as it can be shipped Priority flat rate.
