I have been helping my friend clean out her mom's house. Her father was an Ambassador. Her mother was an Olympic swimmer and great collector. The whole family was widely known in the equestrian world and won many awards nationally. Each box we open contains another treasure. is something which really took my breath away! I believe I saw a report on Enrico Caruso on CBS Sunday Morning win it was noted that besides being probably the greatest tenor of the 20th century, Enrico Caruso liked to draw. He'd grab whatever was around and sketch away. This beautifully matted and framed sketch is signed Enrico Caruso 3/9/1904. We could see that something was written on the back, so took it to a professional framer to open it up and see. T were several artists at the frame shop who agreed this should be taken out of the frame to see what was written on the back. The brown paper on back was cut, the wire holder was cut and they carefully removed the drawing from its frame. They told us it was "dry mounted," meaning whatever was on the back of the sketch is now so securely stuck on whatever it was mounted to that we can't see what was written. It would take more paper professionals to extract it from its mounting, so we left it alone. We think the front says "All Amico Enrico Rupel con simpatio Enrico Caruso Villa Panche 3/9/1904".We don't have anyone around to do a Certificate of Authenticity. All I can tell you is that is was in my friend's family for probably 40 years, that it was most likely purchased at auction, and it certainly looks original We thought we'd put it on eBay and maybe get some feedback from others as to its value and what we should do with it. This is one of the few auctions in which we placed a reserve price on it. This sketch measures 8-3/4 inches tall by 5-3/4 inches wide. Anyone who wants to come to northwest Connecticut to see it before bidding is most welcome! Thanks for looking. Email me for more pictures or details. We would LOVE to hear any comments from anyone on this drawing.
