An Erhard & Sohne Letter Holder, probably part of a desk set consisting of tray, inkwell, cradle blotting pad and letter stand. As was so often the case, all the pieces of a set were not marked with the firm's mark "E with lion-aquamanle." A desk set may be seen in the Brohan Museum's Catalogue "Modern Art of Metalwork. State Museum of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Functionalism (1889-1939), Berlin." No. 117. In that instance, the blotting pad is not marked. And frequently even single pieces were left unmarrked, but this piece is definitely by the Erhard firm. It has all the characteristics and highly quality one would expect of one of their productions. The piece is made of lacquered brass with exotic wood inlays. The lacquer has suffered over nearly a century. The lacquer could either be removed, or the piece left as it is. The discolorations will polish out, but since lacquer was integral to the piece, I have left it as it was intended. The letter holder measures Five &One-Half [ 5.50 ] inches in length. Or, 14.00 Cms. It is Five [ 5.00 ] inches in height. Or, 12.50 Cms. The width is Two & One-Half [ 2.50 ] inches. Or, 6.50 Cms.The piece is in excellent condition. For international buyers, the piece is light enough to be sent by First Class Mail International.
