Professionally cleaned, fully restored and verified as authentic, this is vintage GRISWOLD as it was meant to look!! When this very nice100+ year old #8 "ERIE"-marked cast iron skillet left the Griswold factory , it was NOT encrusted with grease and carbon, was NOT rusty, did NOT reek of rancid oil, and allowing for very routine & careful kitchen use, now once again looks much like it did more than a century ago! This auction is for a VERY GOOD Griswold "ERIE" #8 ( Iron Finish ) cast iron skillet with outset heat ring, in VERY GOOD overall condition . Initially established in Erie, Pennsylvania around 1865 as the partnership of Selden and Griswold, and chartered in 1887 as the Griswold Manufacturing Company, Griswold is known to have produced some of the very finest cast iron hollow ware ever produced in America, right up to their disappearance in 1957. This very early skillet variety, cast from the exceptionally high quality "Bog Iron" mined from the shores of Lake Erie, was produced from 1870 to 1900. This thin-walled variety #8 "ERIE" skillet, with the outset Heat Ring, reinforced rim, and triangular handle support, dates from shortly after 1892, when Griswold began marking their hollow ware with pattern numbers, and finally standardized the pattern number for all #8 cast iron regular skillets by 1894 as "704". Too plain looking to be favored as a pretty "wall hanger", but long favored by experienced cooks for its cooking properties, this fine #8 "ERIE" frying pan measures 10.5" rim-to-rim, 11.0" spout-to-spout, 15.25" rim-to-handle tip, at 2.0" deep, with a cooking surface diameter of 8.5", and has an outset heat ring diameter of 8.75". This nice cooking pan is inscribed on the exterior bottom with the name "ERIE" above, and the stylized size number " 8", below, and bears the unusual Griswold pattern number " 707 " at the bottom's center . A very decent casting for this early era, of fine grained iron with minimal exterior casting roughness, and only a very few casting bumps, dimples and flow marks in evidence, this quality-made and fully cleaned vintage iron fry pan has no chips, cracks, pits, rust, warping, bowing or repairs, sits absolutely flat on any level surface, and rings very nicely, like a bell, when tapped. Very collectible to be sure, and having a warm, rich, dark color, this interesting cooking skillet has been pre-seasoned with vegetable shortening for your immediate cooking use or display. Frequent use of this frying skillet has almost totally worn away the manufacturer's milling marks "CARTWHEEL EFFECT" from the polished interior, and with only a very few tiny utensil marks in evidence, has created a cooking surface that is VERY SMOOTH to the touch, GREAT for cooking, and virtually non-stick!
