Beautiful 1963 abstract by American artist, Ernest Acker (1924-1995). Oil on canvas measures an impressive 35 x 46 inches. Unframed. Excellent condition with no damage or restoration. Signed and titled on reverse. *E. Acker 2/63 Throttle III* are part of original signature, written by artist. Other writing was done later, possibly by artist or another person. Ernest Acker-Gherardino (AKA Ernest R. Acker)(July 3, 1924 - June 5, 1995)Abstract painter, sculptor, and curator. Ernest Acker-Gherardino was born "Ernest R. Acker" in Kingston, NY, in 1924. He attended Harvard College (part of Harvard University), MA, where he graduated in 1948 and later studied art at Cooper Union, NY, where he graduated in 1962.He exhibited at a number of New York City based galleries and institutions during his lifetime, including at the following: Peter Cooper Gallery at the Cooper Union, NY, 1969 (solo), 1970, 1971 (solo), 1972; Jack Morris Gallery, NY, 1979; Steve Bush Exhibit Room, NY, 1979; Outer Space, NY, 1985-89; Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center, NY, 1987 (possibly); The Wall, NY, 1990 (solo); Rockland Center for the Arts, West Nyack, NY, 1991; Steve Bush Outer Space, Southold, NY, 1994; Traveling Exhibition (Still Working: Underknown Artists of Age in America) at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Chicago Cultural Center, IL; New School for Social Research and Parsons School of Design, NY; Virginia Beach Center for the Arts, VA; Fisher Gallery at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA; and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, OR, 1994-1996.It is not known when exactly he took the surname "Gherardino" and added it to his own name. According to some sources the name is Italian (Sicilian) in origin, and earlier is descended from the German and French names Gerard and Gerald. This name change had certainly occurred by the late 1960's when signed and dated works include the second surname hyphenated to his original one, i.e. "Acker-Gherardino." His early works (before the mid 1960's) are often signed simply "E. Acker" or "Acker."He acquired a property with a barn in Southold, Long Island, NY in an area known as "Pine Neck" c. 1968-69 which he owned until his death. He participated locally in Steve Bush Artists' summer retreat and studio space in Southold (1994). He was the long time companion and patron of noted Puerto-Rican American modernist painter Raphael Collazo (1943-1990). A long time supporter of the arts, Acker-Gherardino curated many exhibitions both in the continental United States and its possessions. He was the founder of the League of Exhibitors, Galleries, Exhibit Rooms, Dealers and Markers of Art in Neighborhoods (1984) and Co-director of the Leger de Main Exhibition Association (c. 1980's).His last major exhibition in which he was included was Still Working: Underknown Artists of Age in America, which traveled across the United States from 1994-1996. Ernest Acker-Gherardino became ill early in 1995 and died on June 5, 1995 from complications related to AIDS. At the time of his death his barn in Southold was full of his own paintings and those created by Raphael Collazo, the majority of which were sold by his sister, Kay Acker.Ernest Acker-Gherardino's works are held by the following institutions: Northeast Power Coordinating Authority, NY; Phillips Collection, Washington, DC. read more
