is a very rare 1915 to early 1920's bottom marked 5 ½" tall by 6 ½" wide (from the tip of the spout to the far side of the handle) 8 oz. silver plate teapot made for the famous Essex & Sussex House Resort Hotel that was located in Spring Lake Beach, New Jersey. The Essex & Sussex Hotel was an impressive 250-room hotel built in 1914 and was located directly on the Atlantic Ocean beach in Spring Lake. The hotel was a summer resort hotel opened from June 1st to September 1st of each year and was considered one of the most expensive but luxurious hotels in the Spring Lake area. During the era that this teapot was made and used, persons going to Spring Lake to enjoy the summer resort activities and stay at the Essex and Sussex would have arrived primarily by the Central Railroad of New Jersey or the New York and Long Branch railroads. Today, the hotel still remains and has been completely renovated into luxury retirement apartments. This teapot would have been used in the hotel's restaurant, dining rooms, or for room service, and would have been used in connection with the hotel's china for table settings. It would have also been used for ladies afternoon tea. It is not a souvenir; rather, it is the heavyweight type Railroad, Steamship, and Lunch Counter Silverplate. The teapot was made by R. Wallace Silver Co., is silver soldered, and is 8 oz. It is marked in large letters "ESSEX & SUSSEX". It has an excellent handle and looks wonderful. It's exterior condition is in excellent condition with the usual usage scratches, etc. The inside does have a moderate amount of pitting, discoloration, and some corrosion. A wonderful addition to your Spring Lake Beach, Hotel, R. Wallace, Creamer / Pitcher / Coffee Pot, or silverplate collection. As a geographical note, Spring Lake is located near Spring Lake Heights, Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, Ocean Beach, Normandy Beach, Belmar, Sea Girt Estates, Arrowhead, Riviera Beach, Parkway Pines, Neptune City, Asbury Park, Lock Arbor, Avon by the Sea, Glendola, and Interlaken.
