Estate 1930's framed and matted Kawase Hasui woodblock print that is one of two identically framed prints from the same sale. The second is not Hasui and I do not recognize the signature. I will list it shortly. This one is very difficult for me to photograph; capturing the true aquatint-like 'bokashi' shading tones of the 'dusk/dawn' multiple blues and greys to deep black velvet 'gauffrage' of the tree foliage with their spikes of grey is only partially true to color in the full length photos that are 'blue'. Sometimes the water and moon or sunlight would photograph green or brown. This is the most hauntingly beautiful work of art that I have ever laid eyes on....for instance, the hugh, near complete works of Pablo Picasso at the Japanese National Gallery in the late 1970's (or early 80's?) took my breath as I entered the rooms...but this little piece is most powerful in its complete stilling of the senses. It is signed on the lower right corner. I have not opened the completely sealed back. I did partially slit open the paper back on the second woodbloack print and the cardboard backing is held so tightly with flat metal triangular spikes (the 30's kind of steel) that I could see that they had never been touched and I probably would never be able to replace them after taking the print out. This print by Hasui is, again, completed sealed and the paper is glued down on back. So, I have not seen the border for printing, publishing info...nor bleeding to the back of the print. The flat black paint on the slight incised bamboo frames (of both pieces) is flaking off (at the touch) to show a blond, natural grain wood that looks like bamboo. The piece has a slight 'antique'/aged odor. The print itself is in excellent condition....and the colors seem perfect, as if these have never seen the sun (only for one photo for this listing). The frame measures 19 1/8" high x 14 1/2" wide x 7/8". The viewing image is 14 1/8" h x 9 1/4" w. It is under a very dense (grey tinted?) and possibly UVA glass. The thick matting is a sort of slate grey color. I will ship intact unless buyer would rather have the print and matting only. Shipping as listed includes the frame. Great work of art! Thanks!
