Monastery", 1895, etching on fine wove paper, 9 1/4" x 11 1/8", scant margins, pencil signed by the artist lower right and signed D. Cameron in the plate on the wall above the steps on the left side. From the North Italian Set, issued in an edition of only 25. Collector's mark of E. M. Henn on verso, see [Lugt 872b]. A fine impression in fine condition [Rinder 206 iii/iii]. Cameron, a Scottish painter and etcher, first became prominent through his etchings, which were detailed, strongly designed studies of architectural subjects, landscapes and street scenes - some influenced by Whistler. "Monastery" is a fine example of Cameron's technique. Cameron used very fine drawing needles in his traditional etching, cross hatching and line work exemplified by this work. The 20 3/8" x 18 1/2" bronze gold frame has a repeating arching pattern which echoes the architecture of the buildings depicted. The frame is complemented with a 100% acid free flannel york outer mat, deep burgundy inner matte and conservation UV glass.
