Ethiopian Coin Silver Cross and Trade Bead Necklace This heavy necklace -- which weighs almost a half-pound (7 oz.) -- is made of coin silver coptic rosses and trade beads. The crosses are magnificent, and vary in form. One famous collector and auctioneer to whom I showed this piece described what he saw as possible "Moorish influences" in the design. The beads, which are Venetian in origin, look like pomegranate seeds and are of the same period of the coin silver, and both are estimated to be approx. 200 years old, though they may very well predate 1800. This antiquity is a true thing of beauty, and found its way to us through the auction circuit in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We have set the reserve to an incredibly low price of $89, well below the wholesale value of this piece which is estimated to be between $170-$230.
This necklace, which measures slightly over 28-inches (71 cm) in length, has 90 such "pomegranate" beads, another 32 coin silver beads, and 11 heavy coin-silver pieces, including six crosses, two of what appear to be Stars of David, and three other ornamental pieces that really don't much look like crosses at all. The largest of these, the center pendant, measures 2 3/4 inches (7 cm) in length and 1 5/8 (4+ cm) wide. It appears to be strung with gut-string. Please ask ALL questions before bidding, as this necklace is being sold AS IS. It is, however, guaranteed to be authentic, and is such, returns will be accepted only if the buyer can substantiate it is not an authentic piece as described, under the conditions specified below. International bidders are welcomed, but PLEASE contact me first for a shipping quote! Good luck bidders! NOTE: Those of you watching this necklace may have noticed the title description has been changed. A helpful and informed fellow Ebay member has contacted us to tell us the silver crosses are Ethiopian coptic crosses. A little bit of research seems to confirm this. We ask anyone intersted in this necklace to search Ebay for 'Ethiopian coptic cross." You will see similar crosses. BTW, conducting such a search will also verify just how low we have set the reserve on this beautiful piece! NOTE: We contacted the source from w we had acquired this necklace and were able to acquire one more Coptic necklace -- the only other one they had -- which has just been listed.
