Modern Soul Rarity Eugene Haywood, Weekends & Holidays, Hammer n' Nails Records, HNS-1948, 1980 Private label out of Boulder, Colorado. Extremely rare; not seen outside of the Colorado area. This is the same label that Chuck Rainey's Born Again LP was released on. I have a copy of that killer funk/jazz date listed right now. In 12 years of very active searching in the Colorado region (and in many other parts of the country), this is the only copy of this LP I have ever seen. None of the other better Colorado-area dealers I have talked with are familiar with it. An excellent Modern Soul / Boogie date. Dance floor gold. Five of the nine tracks are killer uptempo modern boogie dance numbers or midtempo funk numbers. Of the remaining four numbers: One number features a reggae groove; one is a slow jam; one is a midtempo groove with an island feel; finally t is the unexpected choice of "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd as a cover, which is given an updated Fame Studio/Muscle Shoals Studio Southern soul treatment.Every dance track is excellent, energetic, driving. No cliche disco grooves But lots of dance floor appeal. The players are crack, funky and on fire. Chuck Rainey is definitely playing bass. The tunes are all catchy, have excellent grooves, excellent melodies, killer arrangements. Excellent production with nice large sound. read more
