Culture: European Celtic - Gaul Northern France Date: 2nd - 1st Century BC Size: Large Subject 5.3 x 5.5cm - 89.9 Grams Description: A Stunning and RARE Zoomorphic pendant / amulet in Lapis Lazuli which depicts it is suggested , an Owl . The head details are carved to show large projecting circular eyes with the wings detailed with inscribed lines to the body. To the rear of the this large pendant is a single hand drilled hole which is seen as the the retention loop for the hanging of the amulet. There is a crude style to the amulet which is typical of a number of Celtic representations particularly heads. The artefact shows good stone traces for hand carving and there are also well defined calcite deposits seen within these areas which attest to the age of the amulet. The Lapis Lazuli would have been a traded item, coming further from the east however, it was used and prized for its striations in gold and blue nature across Europe and into areas such as Eypgt and beyond.. In some European Celtic traditions the Owl was associated with the Goddess Blodeuwedd (Irish and Welsh) and the Maiden of the Triple Goddess - Goddess of the Earth particularly. This Amulet may represent a representation however it originates from Northern France or the Gallo Belgic region of the North Western Celts.
