European Pre Celtic Bronze Age Bronze Socket Axe 800BC! You are bidding on a very rare late bronze age Decorated European Socketed Axe found in Germany near the Danube river. Period: European late bronze age, 1000 BC - 600 BC. In the bronze age, most of Europe was covered in trees; progressive de-forestation then occured in the hans of man, to build houses and boats..Such axes were largely responsible for this deforestation, although they would have also been used in battle when necessary..Some scholars speculate that they could have been votive offerings for gods, human requests for favours. Very rare. Unrestored; fantastic. Very rare, superb Ribbed decoration on both sides. A fantastic looped socketed specimen of considerable size; Cutting edge intact and unrestored; loop slightly bent but intact. Length: 4 inches; width 1 7/8 inches.
