Beautiful pair of early 20th century portraits of Sts. Jane de Chantal and Francis de Sales, founders of the religious order of nuns known as the Sisters of the Visitation of Holy Mary (VHM). The paintings were purchased at auction when the Sisters moved their monastery from Wilmington, Delaware in 1993, after 100 years in that location. The paintings were found in the attic and had obviously been t for quite a while. Each measures 34" wide x 48" tall, oil on canvas, no frames. The portrait of St. Jane holding the Sacred Heart has some scrapes to the surface, a more recent repair noted, and one small (1/4" diameter) tear along the edge of one stretcher (see photos). The portrait of St. Francis de Sales has no apparent damage or repairs. The pictures are unsigned. These will be a wonderful addition to a home, chapel, monastery, or other religious setting, or simply an unusual decorative element. They will be professionally packed for shipping. The Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary was founded on June 6, 1610 in Annecy , France (then Savoy ), by Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jane de Chantal. The Order was founded "to give to God daughters of prayer, and souls so interior that they may be found worthy to serve His infinite Majesty and to adore Him in spirit and in truth." (St. Francis de Sales) Visitation Sisters are cloistered, contemplative religious who are dedicated to a life of prayer and of living in community. The Liturgy of the Hours is sung five times each day and two hours of mental prayer and spiritual reading are also prescribed. Noon and evening recreation alternate with community work, which is performed in silence.
