A spectacular example of antique blue cobalt decorated stoneware in the highly-collectible 2 gallon size complete with its original cork! I believe this piece dates to c1860 because of the crude shape of the jug, the unusual tapered and extra-wide top lip and the extra-thick and fabulous blue cobalt floral decoration. It has no makers mark, but appears to be of early New York or possibly Vermont origin. This beautiful jug is in absolutely perfect condition in every aspect. T are no chips, cracks, fleabites, hairlines or any other damage. T's a natural salt glaze drip at the rear bottom of the jug. The blue cobalt decoration is some of the most flamboyant and finely-done artistry that I have seen thus far. The craftsmanship is unparalleled with the multi-petaled flower, leaves and vine done in perfect proportion. The artists even went so far as to add a deep blue cobalt dotted and lined border to the top above the floral decoration! The jug is marked with an incised " 2" at the top that is highlighted in blue cobalt. The entire blue cobalt decoration is done with an extra-thick application with no frying. Whoever did this piece exercised great care and took great pride in producing it. Now is your chance to own it and display it with pride. This is destined to be one of your finer pieces with satisfaction guaranteed. Dimensions: 14" high with a 8 1/2" diameter base. Top rim diameter 2 3/4".
