For auction we have an excellent Indian ivory carved jewelry box or casket in a large and impressive size. This casket or box was produced in India around the turn of the century or c1900 for export and the local tourest trade. Wonderful thick slabs of high quality grained elephant ivory has been used for all sides and top with well detailed elephants used as the box's feet along with nicely pierced and carved ivory trim skirting running between each elephant foot. The entire outside of this box has been saturated in relief carving, t are superbly done continuous flowing vines, flowers, leaves and berries as well as very detailed oval reserves filled with finely carved figures, dieties and clothed beasts playing musical instruments and performing other activities. The top is decorated with a large rectangular scene of a group of robed figures appearing to pay homage to a central figure playing a flute surrounded by lush outdoor scenes. The ivory has taken on a wonderful color tone and displays strong graining ecspecially on the inside and the underneath! Condition is excellent having only some short age lines at the corners and some edges with perhaps a small bit shrinkage to the top panel, but nothing at all deterring and no kind of losses or damage, just some good honest wear. Width 8" x Depth 5-1/2" x Height 4". is a great investment type quality ivory box for the collector and really quite a find due to the fact that t were not many larger boxes like this produced in India with a high standard of workmanship such as this one.
