I must have inherited my attraction to cast iron- front clocks from my wife's Father who for over 40 years was the "old clockmaker" in York, Pennsylvania. He liked this type clock and had several in his home at all times. They came in all sorts of styles, patterns and sizes. This handsome example has a number of special features. For one thing the label inside the clock is almost perfectly preserved. Although I wasn't able to photograph it after closing the case, it says CROSBY AND VOSBURG- SALES ROOM AT CORTLANDT STREET #4 GILEY BLDG.; WAREHOUSE- No. 122 LIBERTY STREET, NEW YORK. Below that listing is the name of the actual maker of the clock JEROME MANUFACTURING COMPANY, NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT. The eight-day time and strike on the hour movement has been recently cleaned and serviced and some additional retainers were applied inside the case to keep it tightly fastened and secure. On the back of the case box are several listings--a sort of history--hand written--that document when the clock was serviced and cleaned. They read as follows: CLEANED Oct. 1883. Another says CLEANED June 15th 1884; and another CLEANED January 27th 1976 and another CLEANED July 1980. And from the looks and cleanliness of the brass movement, it has had another cleaning recently. Into the back of the iron front are the words, "J & R Shepherds Patent Applied For". This was the name of the casting company that produced the iron front of the case. This clock has surely had loving care and maintainance through the years! Crosby and Vosburg were wholesalers of clocks and jewelery in the New York metropolitan area. They were an important outlet for the Jerome Manufacturing Company's clocks in that part of the country. This is a wonderful clock that collectors will want to add to their home.
