Very early and rare Landsknecht fighting halberd with even rarer ORIGINAL ash shaft studded with iron nails. Thick heavy head forged in two pieces with very stout diamond section point. Straight, slightly angled axe blade, the face with circular pattern of pierced holes, stamped with deep shield-shaped makerÃ,Â's mark. Thick beak with a high quality period repair, done with two brass rivets. This 15th/16th C repair actually adds to the pieceÃ,Â's appeal, as it shows the halberd to have been likely damaged in battle and expertly repaired shortly thereafter for return to active service. Integral forged side straps attached to shaft with brass nails. While the halberd is rare in itself, an original shaft from this period is almost unheard of. This piece likely came from the South Tyrolean Fortress of Churburg. For very similar example see Fig. 19, Ã,Â"The Halberd and Other European Polearms, 1300-1650", by George Snook. Length of metal parts 38 Ã,½", overall 80". Shaft with minor worming and some loss of iron nail heads, stained from long use and nail corrosion. Hard to find a better example even in the worldÃ,Â's greatest museums.
