I usually get things out much quicker, but due to health issues (Multiple Sclerosis) I have to allow for the occasional days when I'm not able to do much. Offered for your consideration is an exceptional custom hunting knife from San Angelo, Texas maker Jim Ferguson. Ferguson is a full-time maker who has been making knives professionally since 1987. He's a highly skilled craftsman and experienced maker. He's a long-time member of the Knifemaker's Guild and his knives are very well built. Ferguson's knives are generally priced between $200-$600, although some can range to $1,000. Since we've entered the internet age, hundreds of knifemakers and would-be knifemakers have entered the industry. Some are very talented and produce exceptional knives. A few even produce work comparable to many of the makers in the Knifemaker's Guild. However, a large number simply buy blade blanks and off-the-shelf mounts, put the knife together, add a bit of finish work or filework to the spine, etch their name on the knife and sell the knife as a "handmade custom" knife. Ferguson is a very talented craftsman whose knives are made by hand. The knife does not appear to have been used, carried, or sharpened and remains in excellent condition with just a bit of light storage wear. It has not been cleaned or buffed and remains original. This is a beautifully crafted custom hunter with a clean, refined appearance. It offers an excellent visual balance and it's just a great-looking knife all the way around. The blade was crisply ground from ATS-34 and polished to a mirrored finish. The reverse of the ricasso is marked "329", which I assume would be the serial number. The blade exhibits that certain feel along the edge that's characteristic of premium-quality knives. If you've ever stroked your thumb across the edge of a very high-quality blade, then you'll instantly recognize the sound and feel of this blade. It's a very hard concept to explain, but one you don't forget once you've experienced it. It's extremely sharp and will shave with ease. The blade was ground with a full tapered tang and the taper work is excellent. The guard was sculpted from nickel silver and was very nicely done. The guard was deeply polished and the blade/guard junctions are very clean. The guard is free of any dings or damage with just some fine hairlines from sheath rub. The handle is of Bocote wood and is absolutely gorgeous. The wood was highly finished and exhibits incredible depth. It displays a beautiful grain and a rich luster. The scales were perfectly fitted and tightly pinned. The handle has a deep finger groove and offers a firm, comfortable grip. The knife exhibits a very nice balance and offers excellent blade control. It has a very natural feel in the hand and it's well-suited for applications requiring precise bladework. The blade measures 3-1/4" and the knife is 7-3/8" in overall length. The sheath is a custom leather sheath from S.T. Shepard of Tuscola, Texas and it's of outstanding quality. It was beautifully crafted from fine leather and the front was intricately tooled. It has a rolled edge around the throat and it's just a great-looking sheath all the way around. It compliments the design of the knife nicely and completes the package. The sheath remains in near perfect condition as well with just the lightest bit ofstorage wear and absolutely no problems.
