Exceptional Mid-1800s English Incline Steam Engine, A++ Gibbed & Cottered with Fly Ball Governor, Hand Cut NutsAlmost never seen today, this is an extremely fine, museum quality model of an English Inclined Steam Engine. The inclined engine was first patented in 1822 in England. In its original patent form it was a dual cylinder engine shaped in a "V". Its benefit was that it took up less room in a ship's hull, leaving more room for cargo. This model is a single cylinder, with an approximately 2" bore by 3 1/4' stroke. It features: matching dog-legged flywheels 8 1/2" in diameter; a connecting rod that is gibbed and cottered on both ends; a working, bevel gear-driven brass fly ball governor (balls are 7/8" in diameter) that spins cleanly but does not affect steam input; a brass housed steam chest and valve mechanism sitting proudly upon the top of the cylinder; the valve is operated by an attractive yet simple dual legged linkage that parallels the movement of the connecting rod (a real pleasure to watch in motion); the cylinder has matching turned brass end plates with the front plate having a drain plug; there are 5 very small turned brass oil cups and an additional 10 oil holes in various pivot locations. Perhaps most impressive is most of the brass nuts (55 of them) have been hand cut, filed and threaded from square brass stock. The mechanism of the engine shows no unwanted play and the engine 'huffs' nicely when turned by hand, and runs smoothly on 40 psi of air. About 95% of the original gold pinstriping remains. The engine is about 20" long, the tops of the flywheels are 11 1/2" and the top of the governor is 13" tall. the engine frame is 5 1/4" wide and the crank shaft is 11". Weight is 24 pounds. This will require very careful packing and the winner will pay only the actual packing, insurance and shipping costs. Or the engine may be picked up in Leo, IN or regional delivery may be arranged for a fee. I am hesitant to say 'one of a kind' but you may never see another engine of this style and craftsmanship.
