An Exceptionally Beautiful Old Pipe Tomahawk with a very striking feather inlay in both sides of the blade. The bowl is of the early acorn shape but from the style and tack decoration of the wonderfully patinated haft I believe it to be a mid to late 19th century Plains piece. The haft shows all signs of being correct for the period, has correct color and was created long ago from an ash tree branch for it shows the concentric crack ring around the bone mouthpiece which is a good indicator of an authentic Native made piece. The tomahawk has 14 large all brass tacks and 13 smaller ones decorating the haft as well as hot file branding full length. Some age cracking at the mouthpiece end but the bone mouthpiece is still well held in place. The cleanout plug is still present, in excellent condition but has not been removed in many years, stuck tight and I haven't forced it.The feather inlay is pewter or silver and very well executed. The tomahawk is 18" in length and 6-3/4" across the head.
