Up for auction is a marvelous walnut drop-leaf tea cart manufactured by the Paalman Furniture Company, Grand Rapids, MI., ca. 1920-30's. Paalman was an early premier maker of quality tea wagons and the company was also known for their patented trademark "drop handle" (May 28, 1918.) This particular cart is somewhat unusual in that it features a large lower utensil/linen drawer (22"x 12" x 3 1/2" deep) and a shallow rim borders 3 sides of the lower shelf. I particulary like the angled shape of the drop leaves and the shapely contour of the 4 support legs. The leaves are maintained perfectly erect by an inconspicuous straight pull-out wood bar on each side. The framed and wood handled glass tray top sits securely on the table - a couple of light scratches to the original glass. The original condition and appearance is simply beautiful , but as with all vintage furniture, t will always be "age factors". However, just a few with this piece... I noted a slight wobble to the 14" artillery wheels, although they are secure to the axle and stability is not effected; a small section of rubber trim is missing from one front caster; a very slight sun-lightening around the very outer edge of the table top, (not the leaves) and the tray wood frame has also lightened slightly; a teeny tiny nick on the top edge, but it's concealed by the tray. * read more
