EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD GERMAN HAND MADE MANDOLIN “PORTUGUESE FORM” Made by Augustine Strohmer 1950 GOOD CONDITION AND READY TO PLAY DESCRIPTION This is a very high quality German handmade mandolin with an arched “semi round back” or what is generally referred to as “Portuguese Style”. Made by Augustine Strohmer, who established his luthier business in Nuremberg in 1906. The business continues to this day with his sons Georg and Hans. The business has always been renowned for high quality instruments. The unusual feature is the slightly curved (similar to the roman Embergher mandolin)) fingerboard and the curved bridge. Good for someone who wants to play an instrument with the key features of roman mandolin regarding fretboard and neck: narrow fretboard and neck, triangular neck. Overall the mandolin is in very good condition with just some minor dings and light scratch marks on the back SOUND ASSESSEMENT (Please note that references to sound quality are based on my own experience and opinion) A very easy instrument to play with a good string layout. All notes clear with an even sound and no buzzing, nice “ring” and good sustain. Nice range of sound colours and very good dynamics. The inside label reads: Aug. Strohmer Intrumentenbauer "Goldene Medallien" 1950 Deichslerstrasse 21 INSTRUMENT DETAIL Front/Top: The top is solid spruce in good condition with no cracks or splits, just a few minor dings and some light plectrum marks. An oval sound hole with a rosewood inlaid scratch plate. There is also a very nice wooden string guard / arm rest which is in good condition and fully intact Bridge: Appears to be made from ebony with a bone saddle. The bridge is “curved” to accommodate the curved fingerboard. Bridge is in good condition and I’m sure it is the original Back: I think the back and sides are stained maple. The back is made up of 7 individual arched ribs and there are no cracks or separations to the back or sides. There are some very light scratches on the back. Neck: 99% straight. Fretboard: The fretboard is of ebony wood with 19 frets (which includes a zero fret) in good playable condition. There are mother of pearl position inlay markers at the 5 th 7 th 10 th and 12 th frets. Unusually, and I think a sign of the quality of the instrument is the slightly curved fretboard. This is usually seen in the highly desirable mandolins made by Embergher. It is also very narrow at the nut, just 22cm and this again this "narrow neck" feature is to be found in the Embergher style of mandolin Head/Machine heads: The head is in good condition (although some has drilled a hole at the top). Machine heads and tuning pegs appear original and all in full working order. Tuning pegs are made from bone and a couple of the pegs are a bit stiff. Strings: All present. As this is a quality instrument I suggest that a set of good quality strings are fitted. Action : A medium action with no issues.
