Princess Augusta of Hesse-Cassel (1797 - 1889), later Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge, was the consort of Prince Adolphus, 1st Duke of Cambridge, the 10th born child and 7th son of His Highness King George III and Queen Charlotte. Her Highness Princess Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa, the 3rd daughter of Friedrich III, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel, Lord of Rumpenheim, and his wife Caroline Polyxena, daughter of Prince Karl Willem of Nassau-Usingen, was born at Rumpenheim Castle, Cassel, Germany. Her father was the youngest son of Princess Mary, the 3rd daughter of George II of Great Britain. In 1803, her uncle assumed the title of Elector of Hesse-Cassel, wby the whole extended Hesse-Cassel dynasty gained an upward notch in hierarchy, including young Augusta. On May 7 at Cassel, and then again on June 1, 1818, Princess Augusta married her second cousin, The Duke of Cambridge, when she was 21 and he was 43. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had three children. From 1818 until the ascension of Queen Victoria and the separation of the British and Hanoverian crowns in 1837, the Duchess of Cambridge lived in Hanover, w the Duke served as viceroy on behalf of his brothers, King George IV and King William IV. The Duke and Duchess returned to Great Britain, w they lived at St. James Palace, London. The Duchess survived her husband by 39 years, dying at the age of almost 92. Her titles included: Her Highness Princess Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa of Hesse-Cassel Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge Her Royal Highness Princess Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge. Augusta was the mother of Prince George, Duke of Cambridge; Princess Augusta of Cambridge; and Mary of Adelaide. She was the grandmother of Queen Mary, consort to George V; great-grandmother to both Edward VIII (later The Duke of Windsor) and King George VI; and great-great-grandmother of Elizabeth II. It is very unusual to find a photograph of this member of the royal family, and doubly rare to find one signed. The carte-de-visite photograph, by Sarony, Scarborough, signed 'Augusta', is approximately 4" x 2½", n.d., c. 1869, showing her in a bonnet and holding a posey. T are slight traces of laying down on verso, otherwise good, with the back printing of "Sarony, Photographer to the Queen." I am parting with a portion of my collection. Happy bidding!
