VERY LOW OPENING BID WITH NO RESERVE! For your consideration is an EXCESSIVELY Rare BENJAMIN VULLIAMY Ormolu BRONZE LION! Black marble base measures about 7" long x 3.75" deep x about 1" thick. The bronze lion portion measures about 6.5" long x 3" deep x 4.75" tall to the top of his mane EXCLUDING the marble base & is VERY HEAVY!The bottom of the solid bronze lion was hand engraved in period script by the sculptor Benjamin Vulliamy "Publas the Act directs 1st Aug 1800 by B. Vulliamy & Son London". Vulliamy was world renown at the time...as he is now...as "The Clockmaker To The King" from 1773. Vulliamy was instrumental in the production and development of a new type of ornamental clock case in the 1780s in which high quality gilt bronze was combined with finely modeled biscuit porcelain figures in an attempt to surpass French biscuit porcelain and ormolu bronze production...and to promote English manufacture. The camera can only capture it to a certain extent and doesn''t really do it the justice it deserves! This ormolu bronze is in great condition with just a few minor, tiny inconsequential surface scuffs/scrapes/losses to the gold gilt finish. Not at all distracting or disturbing...just stated for the record. The read more
