They donâe(tm)t come in much better condition than this. Victorian Tunbridge Ware Tea caddy in a condition that would delight any keen collector. Measures approximately 9âe x 4 ¾âe x 5âe. Rosewood veneer all in excellent condition with no missing or replaced pieces, no sun bleaching, good even colour and grain. All edges keen and sharp. Original matching bun wooden feet. Original Mother of Pearl escutcheon. Of pleasing form with the curved base section, straight sided lid with a slightly curved top.....a style I believe in vogue during the mid 1800âe(tm)s. It is of course the micro mosaic that makes the caddy and just look at the standard and variety of designs on this piece and just as important the condition. Wide floral band to all aspects of the base section, thin bands to all aspects of the lid and a large floral display inlaid in a contrasting light veneer panel with thin border outer edging. Nice use of different colours in particular to one of the leaves w a pale green is still in evidence. The interior of the caddy is likewise impressive with the original lids with micro mosaic borders. T is a slight degree of bowing of the lids but this is quite normal for caddies of such age. The lids are of three part solid wood construction (much like the slope surfaces on writing boxes) with a top skin of rosewood veneer. Remains of the original foil lining to both tea sections. Rosewood veneered lid interior. Original brass hinges and lock with a working key supplied. Though investment potential may not be an important factor it might be a consideration. One thing for sure caddies like this are not reproductions unlike many of the faux tortoiseshell caddies currently flooding the market!!!! A quick scan through EBay will confirm what most collectors already know.....Caddies like this in such grand condition do not become available often. An excellent example of what is THE most collectable form of inlay on 19 th century boxes.
