This print is fully titled "Execution of the Thirty-Eight Sioux Indians at Mankato Minnesota December 26, 1862." This historic event occurred after the Dakota Conflict of 1862, the armed conflict between the United States and several groups of Santee Sioux Indians along the Minnesota River. These skirmishes and fights resulted in the largest mass execution in the history of the United States; 38 Sioux were hanged in Mankato, Minnesota on charges of murder of rape. The event is masterfully depicted in this print made by The Milwaukee Lithograph and Engraving Company. Several of these prints hang in various collections and galleries around the country and are highly prized. This example is in near very fine condition. No stains or foxing, a slight overall yellowing but this is uniform and may very well be as made. A wonderful relic from this historic conflict. Measures 18" x 14.50" Dated 1883 by John c. Wise, registered at Washington, DC. This is absolutely a genuine antique color stone lithograph. Extremely scarce work. Good margins., some minor archival repairs on the reverse. [~~one sold at auction recently June 2006, for $1,100 ] We begin this item at a reasonable low starting price. A very fair opening bid.
