"Execution of the Thirty-Eight Sioux Indians at Mankato Minnesota December 26, 1862." By Hayes Litho Co., Buffalo, N.Y., "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1883 by John C. Wise in the Office of Librarian of Congress at Washington," 14?" x 18" (visible), matted and framed to 21" x 25¼". Very good; light toning and some soiling in the sky area, not affecting the scene depicted, except for one light, diagonal dark mark in the lower right quadrant. A penciled name and date, "Geo. E. Colby, Feby. 10th 1916" are in the lower right border. This was the largest mass execution ever to take place in the United States. Over 300 participants in the 1862 Dakota Conflict had been condemned, but President Lincoln intervened, saving 265 others.
