This powerful netsuke was carved in Japan in the 19th century and showcases a high degree of artistic skill. The scene depicted is the legend of Kinko Sennin, a great Taoist hermit who preached the sacredness of all life and particularly the protection of fish. In Japanese art, he is often shown riding on a large carp. Kinko, a Chinese immortal who was integrated into Japanese belief systems was, as a child, given a tour of the world of rivers and lakes by the King of Fish. When Kinko returned to land, he asked his followers never to kill fish, then dove into the water and swam away on his carp to live with the fish forever. the laughing Sennin is joyously riding on his carp on top of foaming waves and the back fin of the fish is framing the head of the immortal like a halo. The waves are executed in a refined and reticulated manner Sennin are known as immortals living in the mountains. They are capable of magic and flying through the air on the back of animals. It was and still is widely believed among Taoists that man can attain immortality. The Sennin were relieved from the cycle of reincarnation and are said to possess supernatural powers. T are about 500 different Sennin, but only a few of them are frequently mentioned and depicted. PLEASE ALL ASIAN ANTIQUES I AM CURRENTLY SELLING ON EBAY!
