STUNNING ANTIQUE JAPANESE LACQUERED JUBAKO STACKING BOX Magnificent Takamakie (raised gold lacquer) Exquisite, hand lacquered wooden storage box representing the sublime elegance of the Japanese Shogun era aesthetic. Featuring absolutely stunning hand applied golden takamakie lacquer detail. The four tiered stacking box is enveloped on all sides with highly detailed pine branches in high relief, bearing hundreds of individually rendered pine needles. A family of cranes gently nests in the treetop upon the lid, symbolizing peace, prosperity, and longevity. Superbly executed 19th century lacquerwork featuring a variety of precise techniques to include: silver and gold maki-e, hiramakie (sprinkled metallic powders), takamakie (raised makie), and kana-gai (small inlaid gold foil squares), all upon a finely polished, rich black urushi lacquer ground. The four storage compartments are further lined with vibrant red lacquer. Traditionally used to transport special holiday foods, today the box would be perfect for storing jewelry, office supplies, or small precious items. Representing the finest accoutrements of the Samurai era (Edo Period, mid 1800's), and in excellent antique condition with just minor wear commensurate with age. The jubako is a handsome and useful size, measuring approximately 13 1/8" high, by 9 1/4" wide, by 8 5/8" deep.
