This exceptional needlework sampler was carefully stitched by little Catherine Stevens when she was only nice years old in 1838. Samplers are such a special piece for historical evidence of what society was like in the 1800's for little girls who were lucky enough to go to finishing school. These works of art were stitched out to be taken with them as they go off to get married, showing their patience and fine stitching skills - both attributes positive in any marriage of the times. I just love to think about each of these girls and wonder what their life was like...This particular piece has so many fun, delicate pictorial stitching on it. Notably, a deer with antlers perches on a mound at the bottom of the sampler. He is surrounded by beautiful trees and two baby deer. There are four additional butterflies, urns, large roses and a lovely vine surrounding the whole piece. In the middle, Catherine's signature and date is surrounded by sweet, tiny little acorns. At the top, the verse reads:Jesus, permit thy sacred name to standAs the first effort of an infant's hand; And, as her fingers o'er this sampler move,Engage her tender heart to seek thy love:With thine own children may she have a part.Oh, write thy name, thyself upon her heart.Measurements: 15" x 17" (frame included)Sampler is in perfect condition with absolutely NO HOLES.This read more
