Exquisite ANTIQUE Sterling ICE TONGS - Dominick & Haff Ice Tongs were designed and used before refrigeration was a part of life. Ice was delivered in large chunks, large ice tongs were made of heavy guage silver to aide in breaking apart the chunks. Today large Ice Tongs are very handy for use at the bar or dining table to place cubes in water goblets. Large Tongs are also great for serving certain foods such as eggs, meatballs, vegetables or rolls. These are by far the most exquisite Ice Tongs I have ever seen! They were manufactured by Dominck and Haff but I can not attribute them to a particular pattern. I would estimate they are from the turn of the century. They are also marked J.E. Caldwell & Co. This presigitious Philadelphia jewelry retail store hallmark was used first in 1848. The impressive size differentiate these tongs from others I have seen - the tongs measure 9 3/8" in length. The weight is substantial - 138 grams. The arms are intricately pierced and engraved. The serving ends are amazingly detailed - they look like fans with five very detailed leaves in graduating sizes extending from a scroll motif. They are gold washed on both sides. The condition is excellent, no imperfections or signs of wear! T is a lovely 3 initial interlocking script monogram on the curved end of the tongs. I am not 100% sure but I believe read more
