This is a highly appealing BLANC DE CHINE FIGURE portraying the laughing Buddha Hotei. This lusciously glazed masterpiece is of Chinese origin and dates back to the 18th century. SPECIFICATIONS:

DATE: 18th century.
PROVENANCE: Private collection of a Swiss gentleman.
MATERIAL / MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUE: Blanc-de-Chine porcelain. Hand carved wooden pedestal.
CONDITION: Overall fine condition with small firing cracks along the foot rim and some glaze hairlines. The left hand is an old replacement carved out of marble was four fingertips again show material loss. Small age cracks to the wooden pedestal. Please wait for all pictures to load, as they illustrate the condition very accurately. This is a masterful Blanc de Chine porcelain figure depicting the Lucky god Hotei with a bag and a peach in his hands. Hotei's eyes, nostrils, mouth and ears show reticulation enhancing the vivid portrayal.
The wonderful and matching wooden pedestal is neatly hand carved in partial reticulation showcasing pine trees and lingzhi mushrooms.
Also known as the Laughing Buddha, Hotei has a most friendly face with elongated earlobes and he is always cheerfully laughing. Hotei was originally a Chinese monk named Pu-tai, but he became an immortal when he crossed the sea to Japan. It is believed that rubbing his stomach will bring good luck. His name means 'cloth bag' or 'glutton' and he is the god of contentment and happiness.
Dehua porcelain or Blanc de Chine as it is known to the West is pure ivory-white porcelain made at the Dehua kilns in the Southern Chinese province of Fujian. It rose to international significance around the 17th century and inspired aristocratic patronage in the development of European porcelain. Its popularity continued worldwide and the kilns at Dehua remain prolific to this day.
