This is a famille rose porcelain, Arhat/Lohan snuff bottle. It is from the Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Emperor Period.(1736-1795) It reflects the excellent work of the artisans during this period of time. The reverse side of the bottle has calligraphy describing the painting and also contains the seal and/or signature of the artist. The bottom of the snuff bottle has the Qianlong period marking. An absolutely magnificent piece to be added to anyone’s collection. The bottle is 3 1/4” high and 1 ¾” across. All acquired from the estate and exclusive collection of a Palm Springs connoisseur of Chinese art, artifacts and antiques in the 1980’s. There is some wear, due to age, but there are no chips or cracks An Arhat (or Lohan) is a Buddhist who has reached the highest state of peace and enlightenment. They have realized the truth of non-self, and that all is a composite of the five aggregates dependent on other phenomena, originally empty and subject to impermanence. Having eradicated all passions, desires, and attachments to worldly things, each is foremost in his discipline. The Arhats (or Lohans) have overcome the defilements of greed, anger, and ignorance. Their unique ways of practicing Bodhisattvahood have been inspirational for many Buddhists followers since the time of the Shakamuni Buddha. Although their outward appearances may be deceiving, their traits are subtle and beautiful in their own special ways. If only one is able to recognize his or her own potential and work diligently to benefit oneself as well as others, the path towards Buddhahood can ultimately be attained.
