This is an exceptionally lovely, small edition handpainted porcelain Limoges box with an Art Deco motif.
The bottom of the box is marked "The Rouchard Studio Collection Hand Painted Limoges France 89/250." There is also a handpainted floral design on the interior. The number 89 is also handpainted on the inside of the lid. The measurements of the box are 2.5 inches long, 1.9 inches wide and 1.5 inches high. The colors on the cover are an almost irridescent gold turning to deep warm sepia shadows. The woman's face is exquisitely lovely with wide eyes and full red lips. Her clothes and scarf are a black and white floral design flowing out behind her as if in a breeze. The artist initials appear to be a GLS although they could be written in some other language such as Cyrillac (I mention this only because the first letter is rather indecipherable as English or French.) As mentioned there are only 250 of these boxes in existence. However, as they're made of a delicate porcelain,there could be fewer since it's harder to preserve such a piece as you would, for instance, preserve a bronze sculpture. I've examined this closely and all the feet, the hinge, the painting and enamelling are, to my eye, perfect. No chips, cracks or breaks. The metal banding, feet and claps may have been a golder color once but there is not an indication of any heavy use of this box. This is a wonderful addition to anyone's collection and a superb and rare gift for a special person. As always, my auctions start with a very low opening bid and no reserve.
