Welcome and thank you for visiting Sweet Home Chicago Antiques!
This is one of the most elegant Victorian brides baskets we've seen in a while. The brides bowl is a wonderful thin confection of enameled amethyst cased to white glass. The structural condition is pristine, with no chips, cracks, flakes or repairs. The antique bird figural brides basket stand retains most of its rich quadruple thickness silver plating, and together they make an excellent marriage. I want to note for those who may be unfamiliar with Victorian-era glass manufacture that t are a few small white spots and lines from the crimping tool - which the glassblowers used to create the fancy ruffles and flutes. This is entirely normal and does not affect the value of antique pieces. This is authentic Victorian-era glass, which is thin enough to see your hand behind when you hold it to the light. Tap the sides of this richly-decorated beauty lightly with your fingertips, and you'll be rewarded with that magnificent "church bell" ring. The enamel floral decoration was done in a three-color design or amethyst, blue and white with gilt highlights. T is minor wear to the gilt, which is customary for century-old glass. The gilt is not the predominant feature of this design, so it isn't as noticeable. T is a small spot of orange enamel on the exterior glass as shown; obviously done during manufacture. Please consider the photographs to be part of the description. The stand is just fantastic, and it features a large bird figural perched within the risers. This beauty is completely intact with nothing broken or missing. It appears that the top holder was re-attached to the cast risers at one time, and it looks to be a good job. T is one spot on the rounded base that has a small scrape, but t are no large dents to mar your presentation. The cast feet and risers appear to have been surface chased to enhance the depth and dimension of the design. The bird is spectatular, and his features remain crisp. Overall the brides bowl measures 10.00 inches diameter and stands 3.25 inches tall. The foot measures just under 3.50 inches diameter. The figural stand is 7.00 inches tall. The feet span 6.00 inches. The holder for the brides bowl (inside diameter) measures just under 3.50 inches, and 1.50 inches deep. The figural bird spans 2.50 inches from beak to tail feathers, with a 1.50 inch wing span. The stand is appropriately stamped, "R & R Mfg. Co., New York, Quadruple", along with the catalog/pattern number of "4111". I suspect that R & R Manufacturing is a stamping for one of the numerous Rogers Brothers, who take up the largest section of any American Silver Manufacturers encyclopedia. The quadruple plating dates this piece to the Victorian era. This is a fabulous set for a serious collector, who wishes to enhance her display with additional elegance and beauty.
