Designed by the prestigious Franz Bergmann studio, this superb bronze sculpture portrays a blue-winged Kookaburra, an Australian kingfisher bird. The bird found its perfect visualization in bronze and boasts a breathtaking plumage with blue highlights, striped tail feathers and its typical long beak. The multi-colored cold paint is of very fine execution and the amount of detail applied on this bronze is sheer incredible! The rendering of the bird's face, the texture of the feathers are of a highly naturalistic appearance, lending this fine bronze outstanding liveliness and character. Franz Bergmann (1838 - 1894) was a professional chaser from Gablonz who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son Franz Xaver Bergmann (1861 - 1936) inherited the Company and opened a new foundry in 1900. From that time the Bergmann bronzes were mostly marked with the "jar" or the "lily" mark and some works were signed "Namgreb" (Bergman spelled backwards). Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs by Franz Bergmann the elder. In 1960 the inventory of the Bergmann Company was sold to Karl Fuhrmann, who subsequently founded the Karl Fuhrmann & Co. Company. Fuhrmann himself did not own a foundry, and tfore only assembled and applied the hand painting to the Bergmann bronzes. This is why these bronzes were always sold under the original Bergmann trademark. The tradition of the Vienna Bronzes began in the middle of the 19th century with many artisans, was the most famous and prodigious of all was Franz Bergmann. In the "golden age" of Viennese metalworking, the "Wiener Bronzen" was an association of about 120 companies and a handful of them are still producing their fine works of art today!
