Ice Age Extinct Bison Complete Front Leg and Foot 6 PHALANGES , 6 SESAMOIDS , ACCESSORY SESAMOID , METACARPAL , FUSED SECOND and THIRD CARPAL , FOURTH CARPAL, RADIAL CARPAL , INTERMEDIATE CARPAL , ULNAR CARPAL , ACCESSORY CARPAL , RADIUS , ULNA , HUMEROUS and SCAPULA 24 BONES Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene Bison antiquus occidentalis This LARGE LEFT FRONT bison leg and foot is complete to the smallest sesamoid, and in EXCELLENT CONDITION . These bones have been stained in caramel brown colors by the peat/clay of the bog in which they lay for thousands of years. This is a composit specimen, which means that all of the bones did not belong to a single animal. It is EXTREMELY well matched however. Each bone is very large for it's type, and would have belonged to a HUGE BULL Bison antiquus occidentalis. I've assembled the foot and ankle with a low temperature hot glue so it can easily be taken apart and re-positioned or displayed unassembled. The radius-ulna, humerous and scapula are too heavy for hot glue to hold them together. All of these bones are in excellent condition. T is a strange little crack to the shoulder blade (picture), but the bone is like all of the others, very solid and stable. Nice! ( : The bones in the pictures are the bones that you will get : ) Be sure to Check out my other items for more bog fossils from the Anoka sand plain! * * * These bones and teeth were unearthed by my wife and I from a peat bog in an urban development site in central Minnesota during the 80's and early 90's. We'd been searching the general area for fossil bison etc. since our first finds in 1972-73 along a small creek which flows near the site. Now the peat bog has been replaced by a series of drainage ponds serving the development. These specimens were legally obtained from private land. Along with the Bison antiquus occidentalis remains from the Anoka sand plain site #1, we recovered a few scattered remains of quite a number of other types of animals, including; giant beaver ( Castoroides Ohioensis ), wolf ( Canis lupus ?subspecies ), eastern elk ( Cervus elaphus canadensis ), and others. Fish, mammals, reptiles, birds. Insects, mollusks, and of course, a lot of plant material. Be sure to Check out my other items . Q- How do you know that these specimens are Bison antiquus occidentalis ? A- Good question. You can't tell to what Bison sub-species any particular tooth or bone belongs by just looking at it's features. As a matter of fact, except for the patina of age, bison teeth (and many of the bones) look quite similar to the those of cattle ( Bos ). The answer is that these specimens have a certain provenance.
