CLASSIC NEW DIRECTION TITLE CRAIG COVER AND ART LAST ISSUE SEVERIN,CRANDALL ARTART CODE APPROVED After the War ended, comic sales started to drop. More specifically, superheroes as a genre began to drop. Publishers looked around for something to replace the long-johns. Under the guidance of Max Gaines, had a history of publishing books such as Picture Stories of the Bible and Pictures Stories of American History. In 1947 Max Gaines died in a boating accident and his son William came in to deal with the family business. William had a slightly different take on the comic industry. Within a year the titles published by EC had begun to move away from the standards established by Max. William was trying to keep a company afloat in a decreasing market. The titles they published got them in a small amount of trouble with the public and ultimately the Senate. In response to the criticism of what they were publishing, Gaines and his staff got rid of the New Trend titles and came up with the New Direction books. These were meant to be a bit more palatable to the average reader, non-threatening to kids and Zombie-free. Taken from the world of newspapers, Extra debuted with stories based on newspaper stories of the day. This issue features a cover by Johnny Craig. The first three issues of this title featured B/W cover art. The lack of color was felt to be hurting sales so with issue #4 they changed artistic direction. Note that this issue is Code approved. It is also the last issue of the title. The book has been graded VG+. The cover is a bit worn but it still has a nice bit of a reflective gloss. The spine has some stress. The staples are solid.
