EXTRAORDINARY ANTIQUE FOLK ART
PAINTED TIN MOON This stunning crescent moon is a partner to the sun I also have listed, but as wonderful as they are as a pair, they can be used just as dramatically individually. This wonderful moon could warm up any night sky. It is folk art at its best. The early tinsmith who crafted these two whimsical pieces invested each with bold naivete. This artist had the soul of a Chagall. The piece is a two faced, three-dimensional characterization of a crescent moon, exhibiting great humor and creative license, right down to the spikey lashes surrounding both eyes. This Country artisan displayed a joyfully naive but sophisticated talent. The moon measures 15 3/4" in height, and 3 1/2" in depth, from rosy cheek to rosy cheek. The paint is all original -- a charming peach rising to blushing pink on the cheeks, forehead and chin. His wide, painted eyes are gray; his lips are deep pink. His nose is sharp, with flaring nostrils that are sculpted open. The piece is in very good condition -- the pictures fully depict any wear. T is no break or dent in the tin. As with the sun, the turn of the last century is a conservative estimate of its age. These pieces may have been part of a trade sign, or perhaps decorated a merry-go-round or a footlighted stage. They have great artistic potential in any room of a home. Give your love the sun and the moon this Christmas.
