A 19th century wooden sewing clamp, most probably made in the Netherlands. The clamp has a velvet pincushion surmount, a round mirror in brass mounting and three transfer pictures over white painted wood, depicting a steam train with passengers, three men walking and a dog with two puppies. The clamp is 6 1/2" high, the pincushion is 2 5/16" long by 1 1/4" wide. The clamp could be fastened to the edge of a table or to the arm of a chair by a wooden screw. The mirror gave extra light and it could be used as a rear-view mirror for secretly observing people in the same room. Wooden clamps like this one were made in the Northern part of the Netherlands about 1840. The book by Kay Sullivan, "Needlework Tools and Accessories", has a familiar clamp on page 97. That one has hand painted decorations; the clamp for auction here has transfer prints. Note that the first steam train in the Netherlands ran in 1839. I love the old prints, that must have given a modern touch to this clamp. So I bought it, though it has wear. The condition is good to fair. There are, as you can see from the pictures, tiny holes in the fabric of the cushion, where the sawdust filling can run out. The gold paper strip between the cushion and the wooden post is not complete. The mirror has a small dull spot and there are surface scratches to the transfers. The screw read more
