Offered for your consideration is this very fine and extremely old box. What the exact function and purpose of this box I do not know. It appears to have been crafted with a degree of care reserved for very special items such as perhaps a gentleman's jewelry or perhaps to hold implements for writing such as pen nibs and sealing wax etc. The reason I think it is more likely to have been the latter is because had the box been intended for jewelry I would have expected it to be lined with velvet or silk. The box has a burl wood veneer on the sides and the lid or top has some fairly sophisticated marquetry stringing consisitng of minute black and yellow chevrons. The box measures approximately 10 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 by 3 1/4. Condition of the box is good considering its age but it does have many age related issues. The bottom of the box has a large age crack from wood shrinkage. T are several small pieces of veneer that are missing and the escutcheon that goes over the hole for the lock is hanging by one nail.
