One of the Rarest of Staffordshire Transferware Forms: aPuzzle Jug with a blue transfer showing a rural scene. Period puzzle jugs show up from time to time in Delft or Fainence, Pottery or Stoneware, but RARE is the Transferware Puzzle Jug. This example dates c. 1820-1830 (perhaps a bit earlier) and the scene shows a rather eclectic landscape that includes pagoda-style buildings and what could pass as ski-slope condos! T is a mare and foal grazing on the lawn, as well as 2 deer, ruins in the distance, an arched bridge and 2 Asian-dressed figures walking away from the bridge (some might consider this transfer to be transitional between pure chinoiserie and romantic landscape, especially looking at the trees). The pierced neck of this jug includes transfers both inside and outside, but it is hard to tell exactly what the transfers depict. T is a hollow chamber and 3 spouts just below the neck, and, of course, the handle is hollow. The jug is large (8" tall) and includes a pedestal base 4 ½" in diameter. Puzzle jugs were Pub Amusements. After hoisting many, patrons, especially strangers, might be asked to pour or drink out of this vessel with its pierced top without spilling. Even if you know the trick, it is not easy, and I'm sure a lot of people went home smelling like a pub! The trick, of course, is to cover 2 of the 3 spouts with your fingers AND the hole on the underside top of the handle, and then pour or drink out of the remaining spout. I would imagine, given the small size of the hole at the bottom of the jug and the tiny diameters of the spout openings, it would take some doing even to get a small taste! This jug is in remarkably good condition (fine or better!), especially given how much frustration and spillage it must have created! The transfer is crisp and the color strong. T is a well-done professional repair to a section of the pierced neck, noticeable mostly by the 'in-painting' on the inside. The ends of all 3 little spouts may also have been restored, but I am not sure. T are no other chips, cracks, lines or repairs (that I can find) on this jug, and the handle is also original, with only a very faint line w it joins the hollow collar. is your chance to get an exceptionally rare and hard-to-find piece of Blue Transferware for your collection. Buyer prepays, plus postage (for US buyers, I will use Registered Priority Mail; for International buyers, I would prefer to use International Express Mail; shipping weight, with double boxing, will be about 6 pounds - 3 kilos).
