A pretty little pocket camera. History: This is a collapsible bellows camera forsingle glass plate exposures. It is featured in Eaton Lothrop’s A Century of Cameras , pp. 51-52. J.F. Shew & Co. was a London, England manufacturer. The Eclipse was made from 1885 to about 1901, when it lived up to its name and was eclipsed by the similar Shew Xit . The Eclipse is a fixed focus camera, being in focus at infinity when the front standard/lensboard is installed in the slots for that purpose. The plateholder is the only thing installed at the back, since a ground glass is not needed to focus. To answer inevitable questions: Photographs of this camera are featured on the web site “Wood Field Cameras of the United States 1870-1930”, specifically compared to the Rochester Optical Co. Katch . Nevertheless, this is the exact camera for sale. Why then is it on that web site? I am the author of that web site. The cameras on it are mine to sell. Materials and Condition: The wood is dark, fine-grained mahogany. It appears to be all solid wood, despite how thin some of the pieces are and how brittle mahogany is. The wood retains its shiny, very well executed lacquer finish, and has age defects typical of cameras of this vintage: scratches, dents, spots worn dull.
